A/Prof Jakob Begun MD PhD is the Director of Gastroenterology at the Mater Hospital Brisbane and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Group leader at the Mater Research Institute. He is also an associate professor at the University of Queensland Faculty of Medicine. He oversees a busy gastroenterology department, leads an active clinical trial group, and runs a basic and translational laboratory investigating the intersection of innate immune function, genetics, and the microbiome. His clinical research focusses on the role of intestinal ultrasound in IBD, effectiveness of therapies in IBD, and management of strictures in IBD. He is the chair of the Australia New Zealand IBD Consortium (ANZIBDC), former chair of the Gastroenterological Society of Australia IBD Faculty and a founding member of the Gastrointestinal Intestinal Ultrasound Network (GENIUS).
