Dr. Amol Bapaye is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Interventional Endoscopist at Shivanand Desai Center for Digestive Disorders, Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital and Research Center, Pune, India. He is a member of the JGES, ASGE, ESGE, ISG, and SGEI; and has been awarded the prestigious fellowships of various societies – FISG, FSGEI, FASGE, and FJGES. He was conferred the Master Endoscopist title – “MSGEI” by the SGEI in 2024. A surgeon by training, Dr. Bapaye has been practicing interventional endoscopy as an exclusive specialty for 27 years. His clinical and research interests include advanced ERCP, interventional EUS, endoscopic resections including EMR / ESD / full-thickness resections, Third Space Endoscopy, Endotherapy for GERD, and Endo-bariatrics.
Dr. Bapaye was selected as ASGE Ambassador (2015) for the ASGE International Training program. He has been selected as an International Mentor for the ESGE Mentorship Program 2023-24 and 25-26. He serves as Section Editor (Endoscopy) for the Indian Journal of Gastroenterology; serves on the International Editorial Board of Endoscopy, Endoscopy International Open, Digestive Endoscopy, Endoscopic Ultrasound, and Journal of Digestive Endoscopy journals; and has been a reviewer for several other international journals. He received the Best Reviewer Award for Endoscopy journal for 2019 & 2020. He has received the ‘Pioneer in Gastroenterology Award (2014)’ conferred by the World Endoscopy Organisation (WEO). He has previously served as a member of the ASGE International Committee. He is an active member of the Asian Novel Bio Imaging & Intervention Group (ANBIIG) and of the Asian EUS Group (AEG). He currently serves as a Member of the Research Committee of World Endoscopy Organization (WEO). He was invited to deliver the prestigious HG Desai Memorial Oration at Endocon 2022 in Hyderabad.
Dr. Bapaye is the Founder and Managing Trustee of ‘Foundation for Research and Education in Endoscopy (FREE)’ – a non-profit organisation that supports training and research in endoscopy. He has organised several national and international meetings and workshops as Course Director. A passionate teacher, he conducts endoscopy training programs for ERCP, EUS, Image Enhanced Endoscopy, Endoscopic Resections, and Third Space Endoscopy. He has lectured extensively at several international and national meetings and conferences and has performed several live endoscopy demonstrations at National & International Workshops. He also runs an e-learning platform via the YouTube channel – ‘Youtube.com/@FREEndoscopy’.
Dr. Bapaye has authored over 162 peer-reviewed publications and conference abstracts and is the chief author and co-editor of the textbook – ‘Practical Handbook of Endoscopic Ultrasonography’. He has 6 other book chapters to his credit. He has reported pioneering work in Third Space Endoscopy – particularly role of G-POEM and PREM for treatment of gastroparesis and Hirschsprung’s disease; and on management of post-POEM reflux; and has also authored book chapters on these techniques.
