Dr. Rungsun Rerknimitr is a Professor of Medicine at Chulalongkorn University, where he directs the Center of Excellence for Innovation and Endoscopy in Gastrointestinal Oncology. He also serves as Assistant to the President of Chulalongkorn University for Innovation Affairs and Executive Director of the Chula Medical Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center.
Dr. Rerknimitr graduated with honors from Chulalongkorn University and is American Board certified in Internal Medicine. He completed fellowships in Gastroenterology and ERCP. He is a founding member and former president of the Thai Association of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (TAGE) and has served as chief editor for the Thai Journal of Gastroenterology. He has authored six endoscopy atlases and developed training models for GI bleeding hemostasis, ERCP, and therapeutic EUS used internationally.
With over 280 publications and an H-index of 46, Dr. Rerknimitr’s research focuses on colorectal cancer, including screening and adenoma detection. He developed innovative outreach programs to increase colonoscopy screening rates in Thailand and created Deep GI, an AI model that enhances adenoma detection. Research has demonstrated a significant improvement in adenoma detection rates (ADR) among endoscopists using the AI model. When compared to those without the AI model, endoscopists utilizing the technology achieved an average ADR of 35%, significantly higher than the 28% observed in the control group.
Dr. Rerknimitr mentors young researchers and supports research endeavors in the Asia-Pacific region. As Education Chair of the Asia-Pacific Society of Digestive Endoscopy (APSDE), he shapes educational programs and provides hands-on training in neighboring countries. He also established a Simulation-Based Mastery Learning platform for endoscopists in the Asia-Pacific region.
Dr. Rerknimitr holds a patent for a metallic stent design, now included in the Thai government’s free-care program. His current focus includes integrating artificial intelligence into gastroenterology and promoting medical innovation and entrepreneurship. He recently received a scholarship from the Thai Office of National Higher Education Science Research and Innovation Policy Council to support his work in AI-assisted endoscopy.
