Shannon Chan

Dr Shannon Chan is currently an assistant professor & Division Chief of Upper Gastrointestinal & Metabolic Surgery of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Being both a surgeon and an advanced interventional endosonographer, Dr. Chan’s research interest lies in gastric and esophageal cancers, mainly focusing in the laparoscopic and robotic approach, in interventional endoscopic ultrasound and endoscopic management for gastroesophageal reflux disease. She also has special interests in peritoneal surface malignancy and leads the only two multidisciplinary team in HK. She is a member of the Asian EUS group, a member of the research subcommittee, subcommittee of the World Endoscopy Organisation (WEO) for biliary and pancreatic diseases. She is a reviewer for Digestive Endoscopy, Endoscopy, Surgical Endoscopy, Journal of gastroenterology & hepatology, and Gastric cancer. She has published over 90 peer-reviewed journals.

Apart from her research interest, Dr. Chan has also devoted herself to humanitarian aid work. In 2014, she joined the Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF, also named Doctors without borders). She has been to South Sudan and Yemen in surgical missions. She was the vice-president of the MSF HK board from 2021-2023 and was awarded the Hong Kong Ten Outstanding Young People in 2022, the Hong Kong Humanity Award in 2021 and Elle International “100 Women Change Makers”.
