Somchai Leelakusolvong

Professor Somchai Leelakusolvong currently serves as a Professor of Medicine and Chairman of the Department of Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, Thailand. Additionally, he holds the positions of Director of the Motility Center at Siriraj Medical School and Director of the Siriraj Gastrointestinal and Liver Center at Siriraj Piyamaharajkarun Hospita.
Dr. Leelakusolvong earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, in 1986. He completed his residency in internal medicine in 1993 and a fellowship in gastroenterology in 1995 at the same institution. Furthering his expertise, he undertook research fellowships at the Mayo Clinic in the United States and the Royal Adelaide Hospital in Australia in 1999 .
With a prolific academic career, Dr. Leelakusolvong has authored over 200 publications, including international articles, abstracts, and book chapters, focusing primarily on gastrointestinal motility disorders and endoscopy.
Throughout his career, Dr. Leelakusolvong has received numerous accolades, reflecting his commitment to excellence in research and clinical practice. Notably, he was honored with the Young Investigator’s Award at the 10th Asian Pacific Congress of Gastroenterology in 1996, participated in AstraZeneca’s Emerging Leader Program in Sweden in 2002, and received the Best Research Award from the Royal College of Physicians of Thailand in 2017. His achievements have also been recognized with the Siriraj Honorary Award in Research (2017), Siriraj Best Clinical Research Award (2018), and the Graduate Studies of Mahidol University Alumni Award for Excellence in Academic/Research (2021). In 2022, he was bestowed with the Distinguished Clinical Service Award by the Royal College of Physicians of Thailand and the Mahidol University Award in Service. Most recently, he received the Siriraj Honorary Award in 2023.
Dr. Leelakusolvong has played pivotal roles in various professional organizations. He chaired the scientific committee of the inaugural Federation of Neurogastroenterology and Motility meeting in 2014 and served as President of the Thai Neurogastroenterology and Motility Society from 2015 to 2016. He is the immediate past president of the Gastroenterological Association of Thailand (GAT) and was the Congress President of the Asian Pacific Digestive Disease Week (APDW) in 2023.
Beyond his institutional responsibilities, Dr. Leelakusolvong contributes to the broader academic community as a council member of Mahidol University.
